No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.
We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human racke is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.
(Dead Poets Society, 1989)
When I made this screen capture set, I never thought it would gain about half a million notes across the Tumblr universe. I only felt like I had to post it to remind me of the many reasons I love Dead Poets Society, one of which is that driving force that has woken the uninspired self in me. It is the beauty of this film: a subtle yet persuasive delivery wrapped in romance that is not cheesy. I became obsessed with this movie after seeing it last year, and since then I have scrawled the phrase Latin “Carpe Diem” on the pages of my notebook and in the deepest corners of my hungry heart.
Williams’ acting in this film, as in many others, resonated so much that when he died, I felt like I lost a favorite mentor.
Rest in peace.
